About the company:

Thunderful is a relatively new company, but with old roots.  It was formed by a number of small indie companies coming together to make something greater than they could have done independently. Over the last few years, Thunderful has grown into four different offices with roughly 120 people making games in team sizes between 15-35 people.

The teams within have developed the award-winning SteamWorld series, known for its frequent genre-hopping and inclusive design, as well as more recent AA-games like The GunkLost in Random, and other, un-announced but equally charming titles.

About the role:

As a UI/UX designer you are responsible for laying the foundation for a great User Experience and will collaborate with the team to gather and interpret user research, wireframe, prototype, and then iterate on user UI/UX design based on feedback. You will design graphical elements, layouts and navigation components for multi-platform releases.

You enjoy working with usability and appreciate the value of making accessible products - “It doesn’t matter how ‘good’ a game is if the Player doesn’t understand what to do, or how!”.

If your last work title wasn’t “UI/UX designer” you were probably that unsung hero who, on top of your role as game designer, coder or artist, also took responsibility for making the navigation of the UI “feel nice”, the tutorial messages showing up at the right time, or of similar tasks in that fuzzy area you later learned was called “User Experience” or “UX”. If so, we want your application as well!

Overall responsibility for the User Experience in terms of, but not limited too:

  • Player Guiding and Feedback, navigation, messaging and tutorials, appropriate difficulty levels and learning curve.
  • Working closely with the design and technology teams to prototype solutions and interfaces in ways that clearly illustrate how elements function, appear, and move.
  • Develop UI wireframes and prototypes.
  • Identify and troubleshoot UX problems.
  • Follow style guides and work hard to sustain the appeal of products and the essence of the brands for which we are responsible.
  • Follow art direction and the project's technical requirements.
  • Participate in feedback sessions, need to be able to both receive feedback and to provide it to others..

  • 3 to 5 years of work experience as a UI/UX Designer or similar role.
  • Have a good understanding of game front-end UX flow.
  • Comfortable using English in spoken and written form.
  • Can communicate clearly, articulate ideas, and give/receive feedback.
  • Be able to conceptualize, present, and execute ideas on schedule.
  • Good time-management skills.
  • Knowledge of prototyping and wireframe tools.
  • A portfolio demonstrating successful design solutions with a strong visual design emphasis.
  • Understanding of how to objectively evaluate a user experience for usability, and then adjust the design based on empirical data.
  • Work within agreed technical budgets and restrictions.
  • Troubleshoot, seek solutions, and ask questions.
  • Balance, organize, and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Have a passion for games and interactive media.

Bonus points:

  • Experience working with Unity.
  • One or more shipped game(s) as a UI/UX Designer.
  • Scripting or coding skills
  • Be able to create simple UI animations
